Knitted Beret

Now that we are fast approaching the winter months, all forms of hats and scarves are becoming increasingly popular – including the classic beret. This simple ladies beret is ideal for beginners, and can be knitted in a matter of hours. Using some brightly coloured wool, it will be enough to lift everyone’s day.

Ladies Beret

Our Beret is made from 100% wool and a few versions of this can be purchased from our online shop – the plum colour here, and a multi-colour one too.

MATERIALS & MEASUREMENTS

Actual diameter, laid flat: 26cm (10¼ in)

Twilleys Freedom Wool 50g balls: 2 balls

Needles:Pair of 9mm and 10mm knitting needles

TENSION

10 stitches and 14 rows to 10cm (4in) measured over stocking stitch using 10mm needles.

ABBREVIATIONS

Rs=Right side

Ws=Wrong side

K=Knit

P=Purl

Tog=Together

Alt=Alternative

Inc=Increase

St=Stitch

BERET INSTRUCTIONS

Using 9mm needles, cast on 42 sts.

Row1: (rs) K2, *P2, K2, rep from * to end.

Row2: P2, *K2, P2, rep from * to end.

These 2 rows form rib.

Work in rib for a further 5 rows, ending with a rs row.

Next row: (ws) rib 1, inc once in each st to last 2 sts, rib 2. 81 sts.

Change to 10mm needles.

Starting with a K row, work in st st until work measures 7cm, (2¾in), ending with a ws row.

Shape top

Row1: (rs) [K6, K2tog] 10 times, K1. 71 sts

Row2: and every foll alt row: purl.

Row3:knit

Row5: [K5, K2tog] 10 times, K1. 61 sts

Row7: knit

Row9: [K4, K2tog] 10 times, K1. 51sts

Row11: [K3, K2tog] 10 times, K1. 41sts

Row13: [K2, K2tog] 10 times, K1. 31sts

Row15: [K1, K2tog] 10 times, K1. 21sts

Row17: [K2tog] 10 times, K1. 11sts

Row 18: (ws) [P2tog] 5 times, P1.

Break wool and thread through the remaining 6sts. Pull up tight and fasten off securely

TO MAKE UP

Join the back seam.Cut a 26cm (10¼ in) diameter circle of card and slip inside the beret. Cover with a damp cloth and leave to dry naturally.
