Valentine’s Card – in the making
Posted By Kent Crafts on January 16, 2009
After the rush of Christmas and all the festivities, it has been lovely to relax with a new cross stitch project for the year. I decided to make a few valentines cards which will be sold on the Kent Crafts store. The first thing was selecting the design and I found a rather old fashioned quaint design by Bothy Threads which I purchased online from Superstitcher. The Bothy Threads design – heart shaped foliage with roses – comes in a handy CD pack with mount board, thread and 14 count Aida. Once I had chosen the design and shortly after delivery, I cross-stitched the design and then measured for a greeting card. I chose a white aperture card from Hobbycraft although I normally purchase my card blanks and decorations from Mad About Cards as they also deliver to my doorstep – and with this cold winter weather, I don’t like going out much!

With a white card and white fabric, I realised the card was going to look rather plain, so I found what I think is a suitable valentines verse, and using Macromedia Freehand, drew this up and printed into the card. The verse reads: “It takes more than lace and ribbons and lovely verses too, to make a valentine that’s nice enough for you. It takes a world of special thoughts tucked into every line, and that’s exactly what you’ll find inside this valentine.” I used an italicised font in order to get the right “lookand feel” as well as trying to match the verse with the stitched design.
To finish off, I mounted the design into the card, glued down the back and then decorated the card with pink and green flower shapes. I then added a rose ribbon, again to try tie in the theme from the design and the ribbon referred to in the verse.

Making the card has been great fun. It was a quick and easy project suitable for any beginner. The pattern is very versatile and you can change your fabric or card colour very easily. Changing the card decoration only would also help make each card unique.
